We have witnessed an explosion in the level of interest and in the amount of knowledge that the everyday person has about the reality of human trafficking in our world today. However, there is much ground to cover in minimizing the disbelief that this global epidemic has landed on local soil here in the Bay Area.
From the shadows of our cities and local neighborhoods, we bring you stories of victims and of heroes in our midst who are personally standing against this injustice—one day at a time; one way at a time.
In the past we have encouraged you to mobilize your heightened awareness—to move from conviction to action. Challenged to act and to serve, huge success stories have emerged: Bay Area citizens have formed clubs, held conferences, written books, volunteered, created songs and poetry, changed consumer habits, and continue to lend their voices to impact state and national policy changes.
Now it’s time to reflect: What’s working or still taking shape? What needs new direction, effort, or focus? As we build the Bay Area response to trafficking, we are more aware than ever that this will be a long fight; so we ask you: “What are you doing to sustain in your efforts against human trafficking?” Look closer; dig deeper. New light can set us free from the paralysis of what we couldn’t see or face in the dark.
Consider together how where we shop, where we eat, do business, and play can shine light upon setting others free, or can cast shadows on keeping them in bondage.
